Department Organized an Essay Competition and documentary show on 13 August 2026

The PG & Research Department of Economics, Zamorin’s Guruvayurappan College, organized an Essay Competition on 13 August 2026 at 1:30 PM in Room No. 22 to observe the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples.
The event commenced with Dr. Remmiya Rajan P. introducing the theme of the competition and highlighting the significant role of indigenous perspectives in contemporary economic and ecological frameworks. The programme was coordinated under the leadership of the Faculty Coordinator, Ms. Jeni B. S.
A total of 40 students actively participated in the two-hour essay competition, which was conducted on the topic “Indigenous Wisdom: A Pathway Towards Sustainable Development.” The theme encouraged the participants to explore traditional knowledge systems and examine their relevance to contemporary development challenges and their potential contribution to global sustainability goals.
In connection with the observance, the Department also organized a documentary screening of Sugarcane for the First Year B.A. Economics students. Directed by Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie, the documentary examines the Canadian Indian residential school system and its impact on survivors and their descendants. The screening helped students understand issues related to indigenous communities, cultural identity, historical experiences, social justice, and the preservation of cultural heritage.
A key focus of the essay theme was SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, which highlights the importance of promoting equality and inclusion. The participants examined how the recognition of indigenous land rights, self-determination, and preservation of cultural heritage can contribute to empowering marginalized communities and addressing socioeconomic inequalities.
The essay competition and documentary screening provided students with an opportunity to reflect on indigenous knowledge, cultural diversity, social justice, historical experiences, inequality, and sustainable development. The programmes also encouraged students to connect economic and social issues with the broader principles of inclusion and sustainability.
The essay competition was successfully concluded with enthusiastic participation and active engagement from the students. Cash prizes and certificates for the winners will be formally awarded during the upcoming Economic Association Day celebration.
